Hi, I’m Shelby
I’m a Fire Resilience Project Coordinator working at the county-level to manage fuels reduction projects, improve forest and watershed health, and build fire resilience in our region, and now, I’m running to be your District 2 representative on the Chico City Council!
I like to say I was born in Texas, but got here as quick as I could!
Raised by a single dad in a small Southeast Texas town, I flew the nest after high school for Texas A&M University. I’ve always been motivated by my values, so after graduating, I spent the majority of my 20s as a public servant, working with organizations like Bike and Build, which took me across the country by bicycle, building affordable housing for low-income residents. Eventually, it led me to California, where I became an AmeriCorps fellow, working to improve food accessibility in Sonoma County, and later became a member of a chainsaw crew in Lassen Volcanic National Park.
As it often goes, I came to Chico to visit a friend, and never left. One of the things that drew me to Chico was the sense of community. Even on one long-weekend visit, I felt how this town buzzes with life. I was so inspired!
After over a decade of living in Chico, I continue to be inspired by Chicoans. I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with so many amazing local leaders and organizations. A few of my favorite experiences include:
Learning the original names of regional plants and waters that give this community life from local TEK practitioners
Teaching students creekside with BCCER’s Outdoor Classroom
Building garden beds and preparing community dinners with Butte County Local Food Network
Building Everhart Village with CHAT
Birding at the Altacal Bird Alliance’s Snow Goose Festival
Hosting a weekly women’s music radio show on KZFR
Everyday, Chico neighbors show me what’s possible when we stay committed to caring for one another and to this place we love. I see people who care about our community—what it is, and what it will become—and who want to see it continue to thrive.
I’m running for City Council because I want Chico to continue to be a place where people can afford to live, work, and leisure, together;
A place where the dream of a small business not only becomes a viable reality but is part of a network of commerce and community; where we have healthy waterways and greenspaces that are well cared for and enjoyed by all.
I’m ready to serve every Chicoan as the District 2 representative, and I hope you will work with me to secure this vision for the future of our city for myself and my family, you and yours, and the generations of Chicoans to come.
I look forward to earning your vote on November 3rd, and working together to build a smarter, safer, stronger Chico that works for everyone.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Shelby Hebert
